| Tips for your move |
| We've been helping people move homes for over 35 years. We understand that moving is stressful and we're here to help. Our removals team have put together 7 key tips you should follow when moving house. |
| 1 - Reduce your possessions |
| One of the first steps before you even think about boxing anything ready for the move is a good declutter. There is no point wasting space, time and effort in moving items that you don’t even want anymore. By stripping back to your belongings to only things you want to keep it will help the whole move go smoother. You could even sell some of your belongings to make money, or if not, you could donate or throw the rest. |
| 2. Book your removal company |
| Once you have removed the unnecessary items from your property, it is time to book a removal company. By using a removal company, you can reduce the stress of the move as well as saving you time and effort, especially for heavy lifting. A professional is also trained to handle each of your belongings with a special level of care to prevent damage to your items. |
| 3. Don’t pack at the eleventh hour |
| It can be so easy to procrastinate when it comes to packing your belongings, but it truly adds additional and unneeded stress. We advise to start packing as soon as possible once you have a removal company booked as it will allow you to turn a chaotic process into something far more seamless. |
| 4. Create a checklist of packed items |
| If you create a list of all your possessions you have packed, what boxes the items are in, and where they belong, it allows you to ensure you don’t lose items and helps you to move into your new home when you are looking for specific items you need. If your removal company is packing for you, they will be able to carry out an inventory of your items for you. |

| 5. Start with the packing of emptier rooms |
| By packing rooms that are used the least, such as spare rooms and attics, it means you can pack without worrying about needing an item out of one of the boxes before you are finished moving. It is essential that you leave items that you use on a regular basis until just before the move to ensure ease of access. |
| 6. Prepare the transfer of your utilities |
| We always advise to make preparations before you move to set up your utilities such as gas, water and electricity so that everything is set ready when you arrive. This allows you to take an extra pressure away from you move. Also, make sure any utilities you are not transferring to your new home are cancelled otherwise you could end up with a bill for someone else’s home. Also, it is worth noting you will need to update your address and landline number with organisations that have your details, including the council, telephone providers, banks, the electoral roll and insurers. |
| 7. Invest in quality packing materials |
| While it is certainly tempting to get cheap packing materials, this could in fact cost you in the long run say if the tape or boxes gave way. We always advise on investing in quality materials including varied size boxes, packing tape, permanent markers, labels, and bubble wrap. This will allow you to protect items during transport, especially those that need to be handled with extra care and attention. We advise that you mark your boxes with the room that it will be going in, as well as writing out an inventory of the box. |
